The Mauritshuis. Holland and has been the home of the Royal Cabinet of Paintings for nearly 200 years. The collection of 17th century Dutch paintings are considered one of the top four in the world. The fact that this top collection is found in the intimate atmosphere of a residence of the same era known as the Dutch Golden Age makes it very special and explains why it is often called the smallest of the great museums and the greatest of the small museums. Highlights include Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring and The View from Delft and Fabritius’ The Goldfinch, as well as celebrated works by such as Avercamp, the Brueghels, Frans Hals, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Van Steen and Van Ruisdael, not to mention Holbein and Rubens.
The Tour Normally Jane would love to great us in person but at this time personal tours in the museum are not possible. Instead she will give us a live online virtual tour via zoom. During lockdown the Mauritshuis has created images of the rooms and each painting in unprecedented resolution, enabling us to see the smallest detail. Jane will guide us from room to room, talk about the paintings and answer any questions etc. almost as if we were there in person. She will also tell us about recent conservation work, including work on Girl with a Pearl Earring.
Members who joined our tour to the Netherlands in 2015 will remember that our visit to the Mauritshuis was a highlight of the tour. Jane later came to lecture to us in 2017 on Holbein and gave us an outstanding talk.
