A journey up the Seine and its tributaries to Paris. This special day of three sessions will look at the Seine’s influence on the impressionists and the rise of painting “en plein air”.
Timetable for the day –
10.00 – Morning Coffee
10.30 – Lecture One – The Seine Estuary
This lecture looks at the artists who flocked to Honfleur and the Normandy coastline drawn by its beauty and luminescence. These artists were the forerunners of the movement known as Impressionism.
C 11.45 – Lecture Two – Belle Epoque Paris and the Cradle of Impressionism
This lecture looks at Haussmann’s Paris and the loop in the Seine to the west which became known as the ‘cradle of Impressionism’
c 12.30 – Lunch
C – 14.00 Lecture Three -The Path to Success – Collectively or Independently
Following the Franco-Prussian war this group of artists moved on. Some followed the course of the Seine and its tributaries whilst others travelled further to pastures new.

Carole Petipher
Carole is an experienced guide and lecturer on combined history and art tours in France with 20 years experience. Having lived and worked on a number of bespoke river vessels and converted barges there she has used them as a platform from which to research her lectures. She uses art in all its guises to explore the characters who shaped France and likes to delve behind the scenes to discover hidden truths. She also acts as a guide for a privately owned ancestral home in her native Chilterns.
